Glimpse into the Design Details: The Dalton

Creating Boston Furnished Apartments with Possibilities

Most recently, my mother, architect and owner of The Upton, created an oven with a table extension on top that doubles as an additional work space for her office. This isn't the first time she has reinvented the utility of furniture and appliances. She pushes conventional bounds to find as much purpose as possible in the designs that she creates. Her passion for maximizing utility and space is embedded in the architecture of The Upton.

The Dalton was the first apartment that we renovated to be a short term furnished apartment. Here’s a glimpse into her design process:

The Bathroom
Keeping the original Victorian bath tub was a non-negotiable, so Laura added a shower head to bring the bath tub up to modern day comfort. However, Laura wanted the space to have more functionality than just hosting a bath tub. She envisioned this small space as a dressing room with storage for personal belongings - that’s exactly what she created. The main storage in the space is a standing cabinet. She altered it to have doors on both sides for total access to storage. The cabinet also acts a room divider between the shower region and another storage spot, and it is waterproofed along the edges. She created a separate doorway that you can enter from the living room to access the storage space. In the second space, she hung a safe on the wall and customized a cabinet around it. She also lined the cabinet with a full body mirror to double as one.

my goal is always to create as much opportunity for different experiences in a small space.

The Kitchen

Laura utilized sleek standing cabinets with sliding doors for kitchen application in the apartment. In a small space, opening doors towards yourself diminishes the sense of space spacious feeling. We also used a reduced size refrigerator and freezer to keep the kitchen region less obtrusive to the apartment.

Space savers:

  • Sliding cabinets = more spacious feel

  • Customize or D-I-Y storage to get maximum use out of them. For D-I-Yers, Ikea has a ton of pieces that can be mixed and matched to create even more possibilities

  • Attach a full body mirror to your dresser if you have limited wall space

  • Re-invent the wheel when possible,

  • Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose!

  • Add wheels to side tables and nightstands to make them multipurpose

Laura’s passion for maximizing utility and space is embedded in the architecture of The Upton.
