The Rich History of a Victorian Brownstone
The Upton first began in the 1980s, when Laura, an architect who had worked extensively on South End properties, identified a historic brownstone with potential on Tremont Street. The property had evolved from a single family home to being a rooming house that was managed by the family that owned the store located downstairs, called The Upton Spa. The brownstone was one of the few on Tremont Street and in the area that had never been worked on and was neglected. For Laura, this was ideal because it meant that the brownstone still contained the original layout and architectural details, unlike many other properties in the area that were improperly renovated during a time period of economic turmoil. Laura decided to take on the property herself, and in turn, unknowingly committed herself to a passion project that would occupy her for years and years to come. She set up an office in the parlor level of the brownstone and meticulously designed each of the seven apartments. Twenty plus years later, her office is still on the parlor level and she is designing non-stop. The Mother-Daughter Duo
Since 1910, the brownstone that would become The Upton has sat proudly on the corner of Tremont Street and Upton Street in South End neighborhood of Boston. The Upton is owned and operated by a mother-daughter team who transformed the building today to a provide a furnished short term rental experience defined by personalized service, modern features, instant comfort, and the feeling of the South End. As an architect, Laura executed the restoration of the property and custom designed the apartments with guests at the forefront of her mind. She gained a teammate in 2019 when Olivia came on after working in television to take her storytelling to new levels. Olivia is the point of contact for guests and loves giving South End food recommendations. The Upton is committed to supporting the South End neighborhood and bringing anyone interested into our community.
