South End Summer: Stroll the Arnold Arboretum

Reset at The Arboretum

You may be staying in the city, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t nature to enjoy in Boston. If you are looking for a little city escape with a nature component, head to The Arnold Arboretum. The Arboretum is a great place to go for a stroll or run, as well as a scenic spot for a picnic or photoshoot. The Arboretum is a 25 minute drives from The Upton or a 20 minute bike ride.

A museum of trees

The Arboretum is a free park owned by Harvard University and in their words, “a museum of trees teaching the world about plants.” The 281 acre park is expansive and full of lush greenery and flowers. There are multiple trails so you choose to make your stroll a brief leisurely activity or you can spend a few hours exploring the grounds. We went on prime Saturday afternoon and did not see many other people there. You can likely anticipate a peaceful atmosphere, not one full of crowds.

The park also features an educational component. There are informative signs through out the different areas with QR codes that you can scan to learn more. They also offer guided 90 minute tours on select dates and times. View the park’s website to learn more.
